WHAT EXACTLY IS HYPERBARIC OXYGEN THERAPY (HBOT)?
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy allows you will breathe 100% pure oxygen under increased pressure. This level is much higher than the 21% oxygen found in the air around you. In a hyperbaric oxygen therapy chamber, the air pressure is raised up to three times higher than normal air pressure. Under these conditions, your lungs can gather up to three times more oxygen than would be possible breathing pure oxygen at normal air pressure. Your blood carries this oxygen throughout your body stimulating the release of substances called growth factors and stem cells, which promote healing.
HOW DOES HYPERBARIC OXYGEN THERAPY WORK?
HBOT works by “force-feeding” pure oxygen to the bloodstream, tissues and cells. By elevating the atmospheric pressure and increasing oxygen intake, oxygen is transferred through the membrane of the red blood cells at a much greater, more effective rate to saturate the bloodstream, tissue and cells. This combination furthers your body’s ability to kill germs and to rebuild damaged tissues. The effects help in various ways, depending on the specific condition under treatment. HBOT is a supplemental therapy used in addition to the other treatments.
WHAT CONDITIONS DOES HBOT TREAT?
See our full list at the bottom of this page.
ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS TO HBOT?
The most common side effect is barotrauma to the ears and sinuses caused by the change in pressure like when someone goes up in an airplane. To minimize this risk, patients learn techniques to promote adequate clearing of the ears during compression. Occasionally, some patients may experience minor temporary changes in their vision during their treatment period. A rare side effect is oxygen toxicity, which is caused by administering too much oxygen. Everything is done to avoid this side effect.
HOW IS HBOT ADMINISTERED?
HBOT is administered in a private setting in state-of-the-art, monoplace chambers made out of of clear acrylic, which allows our certified technicians to closely monitor the patient and permits the patient to easily see through the chamber. Patients are in constant view and communication with the attending technician via an intercom. Patients may watch a movie or a tv program, listen to music via a CD, or simply just rest.
